Figure painting of the ancient Wu Kingdom plays an important role in the history of Chinese painting. The Wei-Jin and Northern-Southern Dynasties nurtured the masters such as Gu Kai-zhi, Lu Tan-wei and Zhang Seng-yao and the glory of painting of the Ming Dynasty. The figure painting tradition characterized by the Wu culture has influenced the creation and growth of Chinese figure painting in the following hundreds of years.
