“形式服从功能”已经成为一条不用推证的公理而被许多建筑师经常地引用。通过探寻这一思想的来源，仔细分析这条将建筑比拟于生物和机械得出的结论的悖理之处，认为功能影响形式，但不决定形式；形式是与“永恒的人类生活”相适应的永恒的形式。

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is always quoted by the architects as a truth. By studying the origin of this idea, the author concluded that the function doesn't dominate the form, though the form is effected by the function. The form is permanence, adapted to the permanent human life.
