Functions of Context in the Study of Pragmatics

语境就是语言的使用环境。有学者认为,语用学其实就是一门语境学。中外学者对语用学下的定义尽管多种多样,但大都是从语境这一因素出发。从语用学的研究内容和范围(如语用含义、语言环境、前提关系、言语行为)诸方面看,语境都是最重要的。所以说,语境在语用学研究中占有核心地位作用。

Context is the environment of language use and it is the integral part of pragmatics. Some hold that pragmatics is actually the study of context. There are dozens of definitions on pragmatics, all of which are closely related with context. Context covers all the research aspects of pragmatics, including pragmatic meaning, linguistic environment, presupposition, linguistic action, etc. Therefore, context plays a central role in the study of pragmatics.
