The Chinese language is characterized by parataxis while English is characterized by hypotaxis. An English clause, a major feature of hypotaxis in the English language, finds a wide application in the expression of many syntactical relationships between sentences. Accordingly, one way to make an English version idiomatic is to use clauses skillfully in Chinese-English translation. This paper aims to illustrate techniques of how English clauses are used for various subordinated relationships of Chinese.
