With the evolution of the international situation after the Cold War, the Korean peninsula, described as "a living fossil of the Cold War", increasingly became the focus of world's attention. There were more and more crises on the Korean peninsula centering on the peninsula's security issues, such as the unificatiofi of the peninsula, the recent missile issue, the nuclear issue and so on. And known as a "gateway to Northeast Asia", the Korean Peninsula was of great significance in geopolitics, so that it became the object of super-powers' concern and contest. As the two big countries with important influence in the region, the United States and Japan respectively had their own policies on positioning the region. By comparing the similarities and differences between the two policies, we can see that as a product of the Cold War, U. S.-Japan alliance is in a stable situation, but meanwhile the trend of its internal conflict will fail to be checked and the U. S. -Japan alliance will ultimately go to the end.
