A Study on the Shape and the Pronunciation of "黏"and"粘"

"黏、粘"二字的字形、字音问题一向让使用者踌躇不定。文章首先考察了长期以来使用这两个字的歧异情况,然后通过考察历代字书、韵书,提出"粘"是"黏"的俗字,约产生于南北朝时期,最初两字同音同义,到元代俗字"粘"又产生俗音,"黏、粘"二字自此走上字形与字音分化的道路。现代语言规范使两个字的字形、字音及词性得以确定,便于使用。

Users have difficulty in deciding the shape and pronunciation of the two Chinese characters “黏”and “粘”. This article observes firstly the puzzling usages of the two characters, then points out that the character “粘” is the popular form of the character “黏”based on many literatures in history. The popular form probably appeared during the period of the Northern and Southern Dy- nasties. The two different characters had the same pronunciation at the beginning, and till the Yuan Dynasty the popular form “粘” had a popular pronunciation, and from then on, the two characters began to have different pronunciations. Modern linguists standardize the shapes, the pronunciations and the parts of speech of the two characters.
