Peter F.Drucker was proud of his status as a stander-by all his life.He kept calmly a distance from the bustling business world and,when he uttered a word or two occasionally,there would be numerous ears erected for carefully listening in the forest of enterprises. However,there are people like directors of Carlyle Group, vice president of Morgan Stanley,partners of McKinsey,senior managers of Pricewaterhouse Coopers,executive director of Goldman Sachs,among many others.These people were the most authoritative stander- bys in the eyes of business practicers: they had earned USD 1 million a year by the age of thirty, speaking business vocabularies in proficient English. Most of them were born and received education beyond the Chinese mainland, but abandoned bravely their status as stander-bys,joined young Chinese emprises and embarked on their true adventures. When Chinese enterprises which had been dissociated from the global economic system for nearly thirty years tried to get again into this somewhat unknown outside world,their arrival brought Chinese enterprises a slice of overseas breed;they helped the Internet enterprises emerging in China march all the way to the international capital market and made China's commerce present an appearance of internalization bit by bit. From outside stander-bys to inside operators of enterprises, what changes have they experienced in themselves,and what changes have happened to the enterprises behind them? This article interviewed six such'stander-bys'and tries to give a business picture they depict.
