《马氏文通》是我国第一部系统的汉语语法学专著。作者不愿意把自己局限在严格意义的语法范围之内,常常要涉及修辞。马建忠论述修辞的方法主要有三种:语法与修辞相结合、历时与共时相结合和中西语言规律比较。把语法和修辞打通,《马氏文通》可算有承先启后之功。

The Classic Literary Works by Ma Jian-zhong is the first special works on the Chinese grammar. The writer won＇t limit the strict meaning of grammar scope, but talks it in connection with rhetoric. There are three kinds of tutoring of rhetoric studied by Ma Jian-zhong：combination of grammar and figure of speech, single experience and total experience combination, the comparison between Chinese language and the western languages. Ma stressed that grammar and rhetoric must be mingled about this views. Ma＇s classic literary works served as a link between the past and future.
