From "The Theory of Culture Integration" to "Multi-Cultures"

谭恩美在小说《接骨师之女》中对母女冲突的描写较之其前几部作品已居于次要地位,她更多地展现了女儿对母亲爱的萌发与理解,倾注了对多元文化的思考。这一叙事策略上的变化可以窥见作者文化心态的发展,也即多元文化观的显现。多元文化观正是我们解读《接骨师之女》以及挖掘谭恩美小说创作主题思想的关键所在。

Comparing Amy Tan's The Bonesetter's Daughter to her former novels, we can see that the author focuses on the American daughter's profound love and understanding towards her mother rather than conflicts between them. This change in the narrative strategy shows the development of Tan's attitude towards different cultures and her thinking of multi-cultures. From this point, using intercultural communication theories, the present paper analyzes how the novel The Bonesetter's Daughter gives expression to Tan's view of multi-cultures. This paper also criticizes the theory of 'culture integration ' which has occupied main position in the literary criticism on the works of Chinese-American writers in order to emphasize that the idea of multi-cultures is actually the key to decode the text of The Bonesetter's Daughter and extract Tan's intention in her writings.
