Academic Activities of Shen Fuzong in 17th Century Europe

南京人沈福宗是清初通晓拉丁文的少数中国学子之一,1682-1692年随比利时人柏应理出访欧洲六国,受到罗马教皇和法、英两国国王接见,又结识社会名流,展开东西方两大文明之间的直接对话,把中国语言文字、儒家道德哲学和波动说传到欧洲,帮助东方学家从事汉学研究,对西方人文科学和自然科学发展作出贡献。但中国史籍对他却只字不载,本文利用英文、法文和拉丁文史料对他不平凡经历和事迹作出全面评介。

The native of Nanjing Shen Fuzong （1657- 1692）was one of a few Chinese scholars who understood Latin language in the early Qing.He visited six European countries with the Belgian philippe Couplet （1622- 1693）during 1682- 1692,and was received by the Roman Pope and two kings of France and England separately. He got acquainted with social distinguished personages to open up the direct dialogue between the Eastern and western civilisation, and also introduced the Chinese language and literature and Confucian moral philosophy,as well as the wave- theory, into Europe,helped European orientalists to do sinological researches,thus he made his own contribution to the development of western humanistic and natural sciences.However,there had been no records on him in Chinese old works,so this paper comprehensively reviews on his unususal experiences and activities by making use of some English,Frenoh and latin sources.
