Collapse of Goodman Brown's Faith——Perspective from Freudian Psychoanalytical Theories

运用弗洛伊德的精神分析理论,对纳撒尼尔.霍桑的短篇小说《小伙子古德曼·布朗》进行重新解读。通过分析弗氏的"原罪"说,指出从恶乃人之本能;正是这种本能引发了整个故事的发生。运用弗氏人格结构理论,对小说主人公的内心挣扎及其信仰的逐渐崩溃展开了深入剖析和理性的审视,发现主人公的痛苦在于其本我、自我与超我的激烈冲突及其自我理想的崩溃所导致的人格异常。

This article, by applying Freudian psychoanalytical theories, offers a new interpretation on “Young Goodman Brown” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The paper first, through analyzing “original sin”, points out that “evil” is one of human instincts, and that the whole story stems from this very instinct. Then, the paper focuses on the mental struggles and the collapse of faith of the protagonist from the perspective of Freudian theories of Personality Structure. Therefore it concludes that the agony of the protagonist lies in the fierce conflicts between his ego and super-ego, and in his personality disorder caused by the collapse of his ego-ideal.
