Han Emperor Wu--di pursued immortality all his life and behind many important political events lay his motive of pursuing immortality. Zhang Qian＇s opening up of the western regions involved not only geopolitical and military factors but also Han Emperor Wu--dis considerations of immortality. Han Emperor Wu--dis preoccupation with immortality resulted not only from the social atmosphere of his times, but also his desire for immortality. His preoccupation with immortality caused a lack of proportion in his administration strategy which he regretted late in his life.
