The relationship between referential expressions and objects can be studied in different ways. Firstly some important distinctions should be made in the conceptual family of reference, and a four-level framework should be established to discuss different perspectives of problem of reference. This paper attempts to show how the debate between new and traditional theories of reference can be deeply understood.
