摘要
无论是《达·芬奇密码》的英文源文本还是两个中文目标文本在语言表述上都有许多模糊之处。根据这些模糊言语各自的特点和属性,本文将它们分别划归为三个大的类别,亦称三个不同的层面,即语言时空层面、文化时空层面、修辞时空层面。在语言时空层面,模糊语言的表现形式可以是语义模糊和语用模糊;在文化时空层面,模糊语言的表现形式可以来自文化意义(包括由文化所指产生的意义)或文化背景(即特定言语在特定文化环境中的使用)上的模糊;在修辞时空层面,模糊语言的表现形式通常在于修辞意义(包括由诸如双关语、字谜等文字游戏所产生的意义)或修辞手段运用层面(包括文字游戏、借代等手段在不同语言中的运用)上的模糊等等。翻译中对于上述模糊话语的处理最常用的手法是以"模糊"译"模糊",再从这一基本手法衍生出"以模糊译部分模糊"、"以轻度模糊译强度模糊"或"以强度模糊译轻度模糊"等无限多的方法和策略。
Based on the preliminary work of my research project and some of my initial findings, it is found that the use of fuzzy utterances is one of the most prominent features of The Da Vinci Code, and that how it is handled in the process of translation or how intercultural communication poses a big challenge to the translator and the translation critic. In this essay, I will argue that the features of fuzzy utterances in The Da Vinci Code can be viewed mainly at three levels, i. e. , the temporal and spatial dimensions of language, those of culture and those of the rhetorical features of the novel. Each dimension is then further divided into two aspects: One involving the denotative and connotative meanings of the language used while the other its pragmatic meanings or significance. It is also argued that a dialectical relationship exists between what is fuzzy and what is “accurate” or “precise” in literary language, and this dialectics applies to the process of translation as well.
