George Moore' s Esther Waters brings “freedom” and “innovation” to naturalism and Victorian literature. The novel expresses a deep sympathy for the people in the lower classes and attacks the injustice of law as well as the hypocrisy of the church. It transcends naturalism, presents a more direct and concise version of realism and even becomes a forerunner of feminist texts. Furthermore, it involves subjective environmental description and psychological description, in which truth and untruth interweave and multiple voices coexist. Together with the cyclic structure and impressionistic techniques, the novel heralds modernist literature such as stream of consciousness novels.
