On Idioms' Translation from the Perspective of Culture

英汉习语反映了中西文化在自然地理环境、习俗、宗教信仰及历史典故等方面的不同;习语的翻译既是探求社会文化,又是"意"、"象"处理的过程。准确通顺的习语翻译要求译者透彻地分析理解英汉习语所体现的文化差异,采用实译(存象)、虚译(存意)及虚实结合(意象兼顾)的翻译原则和方法。

Idioms in English and Chinese reflect the differences in their own geographical situation, cultural conventions, religions and allusions, etc. Translation of idioms is not a process of probing into the cultural disparities but also dealing with the image and meaning.To translate an idiom accurately and smoothly requires the translator originally to analyze and understand the differences thoroughly, and then to adopt the following translation techniques, shiyi（literal translation）,xuyi （explicit translation） or the combination of the two.
