Urban modernization is key point of urban development in developing countries. Sport, however, as one of the important components of society, plays a vital role in the development of urban development. What kinds of functions do sport events, particularly mega-sport events——the main driving force in urban development——exert in the process of urban modernization？ The thesis, based on the 8 characteristics of urban modernization, specifically analyzed active roles that mega-sport events play in the different indicators of urban modernization in an attempt to provide the referential materials for further urban modernization in China.
