Formal Equivalence as a Criterion in Translation of Ancient Poetry

诗歌是意、形和音完美结合的艺术整体。通过分析诗歌中语言形式和内涵表达的互动作用,强调在古诗英译中诗歌形式传达的必要性和可行性,同时,"形式对等"绝不是对原诗语言表层结构的机械移植。

Poetry is a perfect artistic whole of sense, form and sound. By analyzing the interaction between linguistic form and expression mode, the present paper claims that reproduction of some important features of lin- guistic form is necessary and feasible in translation of Chinese classical poetry. Anyhow, “formal equivalence” is never the mechanical word-for-word transplantation of the superficial structure of the original poem.
