Strange Interlude is of great significance for the establishment of Eugene O＇Neill as a world famous playwright. In this play, O＇Neill exposes the heroine＇s courageous rebellion and bold defiance to Puritanism as well as her rebellious and attractive personality. By analyzing the environment of the post-world war, the patriarchal perspective, and the control and dominance exerted by the principal male characters of the play on Nina＇s fate, as well as the defects of human nature, especially Nina＇s unhealthy possessiveness, this paper traces the major causes of Nina＇s tragedy, while revealing O＇Neill＇s negative attitude towards those women who intend to take their fate into their own hands.
