"五四"之际,中国学术突发质变,由古典形态向现代形态转换。《西游记》研究与"新红学"一样,在这一学术现代化流向中并处于突出地位,并以自身特殊的学术范式意义作出了重大贡献。过去,只视"红学"为现代学术的开端而不及其他是不全面的。考察现代《西游记》研究的"原生态"面貌,对于全面、正确认识"中国现代学术开端"这一命题,具有积极、有益的启迪。

During the ＂May 4th Movement＂ period, Chinese academic studies witnessed a fundamental change from the classic to the modern. Similar to the studies in A Dream of Red Mansions, studies in A Journey to the West has contributed to such a change for its special paradigmatic significance. The claim to relate the beginning of modern Chinese academic studies to the studies in A Dream of Red Mansions with the exclusion of other research is far from scientific and convincing. A careful investigation into the studies of A Journey to the West in modern China can help us to have a better and more comprehensive understanding of the above-mentioned beginning.
