General development of OCDMA networks is fully summarized. Performance comparison of different OCDMA schemes is addressed and in which noise is analyzed. The keys towards practical OCDMA networks are discussed in terms of en/decoder, optical sources, optical thresholding. Recent progresses of OCDMA networks are reviewed and the developing trend and practical applications of OCDMA networks are discussed.
