Notes and Commentary of Li Hongzhang's Poems Written in Mingguang

世人于李鸿章,多知其戎马,少知其为诗,以为李公特以勋业显,于艺事无所措意。详析李公写于安徽明光诗,解其用语,究其旨意,于李公史事及为人处世多有解说。特于李公"屡败屡战"之精神,于李公以儒教为雷池,于李公为诗自成家法,多有发明。

Li Hongzhang, well known for his military career but not for his poems, is usually considered to be outstanding in military achievements but rather weak in literature. This paper analyses in detail the poems Li written in Mingguang Town of Anhui Province, tries to interpret the words and probe into the connotation, and explains the way that Li conducts himself. Based on the analysis, it can be noted that these poems reflect Li＇s unyielding spirit, and that Li forms his unique principles in writing poems and holds Confucianism as limit confinement.
