On the Faithful Translation of Dialogues in Dramatic Films

电影主要运用人物语言塑造形象,剧情片更是如此,常常借助对话表现思想、刻画性格、推进情节等。电影中的人物语言富有性格化的特征。性格化是电影人物语言艺术的最高审美价值体现。电影翻译的重要任务之一就是要忠实地传达原片的这一审美特质,在译制片中再塑人物形象。

The main way that characters in dramatic films are revealed to the audience is through what they say, and just as important, or maybe more important in many cases, how they say it. What each character says tells the audience who the character is, his social position, his education, and all the other facets of his background in addition to communicating essential plot information. To faithfully convey the aesthetic value of the original film, the translator should understand the cultural nature of the film dialogues, and find appropriate ways to translate them.
