Aclass of composite materials that is injected into patients to enable the diagnosis of disease has, on the nano-scale, emerged as the basis of site-specific drug delivery systems. Iron oxide particles encapsulated in polymers to enable them to disperse in the bloodstream are commonly used in magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Now researchers are adapting the principle of coated magnetic nanocrystals to a range of drug therapies combining high rates of activity with low impact on normal tissue.
