On Chinese and Western Culture Differences

语言和文化紧密相连,语言本身就是一种文化现象,是文化不可分割的一部分。不同的语言能反映出不同民族的文化差异,但不同民族的文化既有共性,又有其个性。怎样把他们有机结合起来,避免因思维方式、价值观以及民族信仰的不同而造成理解的困难乃至失误,这是语言工作者应该高度重视的方面。这就要求语言工作者对源语言和目的语都有较广的知识面和较深的文化底蕴。

Language is closely connected with culture. As a cultural phenomenon itself, language can＇ t be separated from culture. Different languages can reflect cultural difference of different nationalities. But different cultures have both commonness and individuality. Language operators should pay more attention to the problem of combining the commonness and the individuality effectively to overcome the difficulties based on different ways of thinking, values and beliefs in understanding. Thus language operators are required to have wide scale of knowledge and profound cultural details in both origin language and target language.
