This article makes a brief introduction on the basic structure and measurement principle of GPS, summerises its characteristics when put to use in engineering survey and explains examples of GPS in application, through which it proves that as a rapid and high - precison modern mapping means GPS has already been sucessfully used in the work of basic survey.
