只有从创造的目的和职能方面加以界定,才能够从理论上区分装饰与非装饰,特别是装饰美术与纯粹的美术之间的根本区别。因此,人类出于实用或精神需求的目的,对实用物、环境(包括建筑)和人的身体等所施以的美术形式均属于装饰的性质。从某种意义上说,这一定义是相对于同样出于精神需求的目的,但并非受到实用载体之限制的纯美术而言的。

Only from its purposes and functions, can the distinction be theoretically made between decoration and non - decoration, especially the fundamental distinction between decorative fine arts and pure fine arts. Therefore the artistic forms conducted on the practical objects, environment （including buildings）, and human body out of their practical uses or spiritual needs all possess the properties of decoration. In some sense, this definition is given from the perspective of the spiritual needs, not from the perspective of the pure fine arts constrained by those practical carriers.
