Employing the thinking-aloud method, this paper presents an empirical study of the translation process. On the basis of the data collected, it sets up a model for interpreting the process of translating attributive clauses in English. The model reveals that the translation process does not resemble an assembly line described by previous models for the same purpose. Actually, the whole process demonstrates an inseparable unity, with the link between the sub-processes much closer than has been assumed. In conclusion, the author argues that translation is not a simple code-switching operation, but a very complex and dynamic thinking process that is nonlinear and alternately retrospective and progressive.
