Is Chinese Always Characterized by Parataxis——A Study on Metadiscourse in Academic Mini-lecutures

在分析元话语存在的普遍程度的基础上,探讨英汉微型学术讲座中反映的"形合"倾向,指出就微型学术讲座这种体裁而言,汉语和英语语篇中都充斥元话语,表现出很高的形合性,这和微型学术讲座本身的体裁特点是分不开的。

the concept of ＂hypotaxis＂ and ＂Parataxis＂ are often used ot mark the differences between English and Chinese and the existence of metadiscourse in a discourse can be used as one of the criteria for the measurement of hypotaxis or parataxis. This paper holds that both English and Chinese could be characterized by ＂hypotaxis＂ due to the ubiquitous nature of metadiscourse in academic discourse in terms of the genre of academic mini-lectures. This can be partly accounted for by the very nature of the genre of academic mini-lecture.
