沈从文是中国现代文学史上一个奇异的存在,透视沈从文所描绘的"湘西"小说,我们时常会发现一些忧郁的底调和悲凉的色彩。细细品味,却能从其文学作品的风格、追求目标、题材、处理方法、情节安排、手法等多方面显现出自身的特点:哀而不伤,悲而从容,平凡而寻常,回归而舒徐,一波三折,等等。

Sheng Congwen was a marvel in the Chinese history of contemporary literature. Certain melancholy tones and low-spirited flavors are commonly founded in his ＂Xiangxi novels＂ （a school of literature created by Sheng Congwen）. Appreciating attentively from his works＇ style , pursuit of the purpose, themes, methods, plot arrangement and techniques, there appear unique characteristics： felt but not sentimental, grief but at ease, common and ordinary, comfortable of returning to the nature, full of ups and downs, mixed feelings of grief and joy.
