Liu Ji’s Thought on Undeveloped Tribes and the Developed Nation

刘基曾深受传统夷夏观念的影响,具有明确的华夷之辨思想,但他的夷夏观与传统思想有差别,重在阐述"夷夏盛衰之大机",寻求华夏衰弱的内因。同时,他还接受了当时流行的一些关于夷夏问题的新观点。而他提出的夷夏大同的思想,超越了传统,是那个时代最具价值的夷夏观。

Liu Ji used to be deeply influenced by traditional conception of undeveloped tribes and the developed nation, and had developed an explicit sino-barbarian ideology. But his conception was different from traditional view. He emphasized on the prosperity and declination of undeveloped tribes and the developed nation, searching for the internal causes of Chinese declination. Meanwhile, he also took in newly-born and popular ideas in his times on this issue. His idea, unifying the undeveloped tribes with the developed nation, surpassed tradition. It could be the most valuable conception in this aspect at that time.
