Ptuj is a town in Slovenia whose beginnings stretch at least 2000 years into history. Since it lies by a river (Drava), its historical periods are closely linked to the building of bridges, links between the town that developed around a hill and the plain on the opposite riverbank. The recent history of building bridges in Ptuj began in 1996, with the construction of the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. Because this bridge satisfied the needs of slow, recreational transport and the old bridge on one of the main roads in Slovenia had been a bottleneck for ages, they started to build a new bridge in 2005 that would take the main transport flows away from the town centre.
