Defence of Lin Shu—a guardian angel of the traditional culture of a nation of long history

百年来,林纾的"五四"文化角色一直争论不休。忽而是"新文化运动的敌人",忽而是文化上的"保守主义",近年又被贴上了"文化专制主义"标签。如果从文化现象角度入手,回顾林纾当年的言谈举止,大量史实是不难让我们给予林纾一个中肯的评价。林纾是一尊古老民族的传统文化保护神。我们需要"五四",但也不能没有林纾。林纾是值得纪念的。

Over the last hundred years,there have been great controversies over Lin Shu＇s cultural role in May 4th Movement. He has been labelled as ＂an enemy of New Cultural Movement＂, a ＂cultural conservative＂, and more recently a ＂cultural despot＂. Looking back upon Lin Shu＇s speech and action from the angle of culture, numerous facts can help us make a correct evaluation on him. Lin Shu is reconsidered as a truly guardian angel of the traditional culture of the Chinese nation. We not only need May 4th Movement, but also need Lin Shu. Lin Shu is worthy of our long memory.
