Homologation or interoperability of national railways in the EU has been a goal since the early 1990s. However, progress has been slowed due to the considerable number of differences in detail between national systems, and the expense of aligning one with the other. As might be expected, the way forward is being blazed by the most technologically advanced portions of rolling stock; high-speed trains in their intercity corridors.
