当工业生物技术在合成化学试剂和生物柴油中的应用·陕速发展的同时，自然工艺在化学品加工工业中主要是用于废物处理，其中最重要的是废水处理。从简单的曝气塘——工艺到更加复杂的塔式生物滤池工艺，所有这些过程的目标都是相同的：使要排放到环境中的水的水质能达到可接受水平——由生物或化学需氧量（BOD或COD）决定。
Whilst the syntheses of chemical reagents and biofuels are fast-developing applications of industrial biotechnology, the chemicals processing industry＇s most common application of natural processes is in waste treatment, most of all in the treatment of waste water. From simple pond aeration to more sophisticated bio-tower processes, the aim is the same： to produce water that can be released to the environment in an acceptable state determined by biological or chemical oxygen demand （BOD or COD）.
