Nuclear energy provides a significant contribution to the overall energy supply in Europe. With 148 reactors in t3 of the 25 member states producing a total power of 125 GWh, the resulting energy generation of 850 TWh per year provides 35 per cent of the total electrical energy requirements in the European Union. Worldwide, 441 commercial reactors operate in 31 countries and provide 17 per cent of the electrical requirements. Currently 32 nuclear reactors are being built worldwide mostly in India, China and in neiqhbouring countries.
