In electric welding, current sources are needed that can provide high intermittent DC currents for a small output voltage. While in the past it was enough to use a transformer with taps in the primary circuit,a tap changer and a power rectifier in the secondary circuit,nowadays the welding current is precisely controlled using state-of-the-art, fast-switching power semiconductors such as MOSFETs and IGBTs.
