The paper analyses the origin and achievements of New Formalism, a poetic school that began to flourish in America in the late 20th century, and investigates the differences between the New Formalists and the metrical poets of the 1950s and 1960s, concluding that New Formalism, as a unique literary phenomenon, is justified in its existence by the aesthetic virtues it advocates.
