Because of the emergence of a large number of excavated documents related to the history of thoughts in ancient China since the 1970s, the statement that "excavated documents will rewrite the history of Chinese thoughts" has been frequently seen in the press. It should be examined and estimated as to whether that is a serious proposition, or just a sensational slogan for the media. Excavated documents do create conditions and possibilities for rewriting the history of Chi nese thoughts in the long run, yet their effect is bound to be restricted owing to their own limitations and the complexity of their study, thus we cannot rewrite the history of Chinese thoughts easily by the excavated documents without long and arduous textual rehabilitation and study, There is something in common in the research method of excavated documents and the passed-down documents, and the traditional approach and method should not be denied lightly. "The method of dual evidence" is only a self-evident prerequisite, which doesn't contain much methodology for concrete study. Excessive esteem for "the method of dual evidence" has engendered an indiscreet academic atmosphere, resulting in some simplistic research method.
