France in 1936 suffered too many mishaps. First it lost the important barrier of Rhineland and then Belgium＇s friendship,soon the outbreak of Spanish civil war gave the new French Front Populaire government a hard nut to crack the division between left - wing and right - wing parties made the Blum government hesitating to take a decided policy to Spanish issue. Besides, the British＇ s resolve to act as a stander - by also kept France from taking any definite actions. After cautious weighing of the situa- tion, France finally decided to take a non- intervention policy towards Spanish civil war. This policy certainly helped maintain the harmony between France and British, however, it also made the France itself more divided at home. The French leaders were trying to avoid war all through the year of 1936, yet it was this conservative attitude that made them lose the final chance to restore France＇s confidence in domestic and foreign affairs. Surely, the non- intervention policy did largely affect the result of the Spanish civil war, but the policy and the Spanish civil war under its influence also re - shaped the French foreign policy at that time.
