The Universal HIV Antibody (urine) Testing (MUT) has been offered to all methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients in Hong Kong on a voluntary basis since 2004 to identify methadone patients infected with HIV and to encourage them to receive medical and drug treatments so as to control the further spread of the virus. Since the implementation of the program, the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (SARDA) has rendered counseling services to 46 methadone patients contracted with HIV. With the sponsorship of Hong Kong AIDS Trust Fund, a project named "Sparks Action" has been launched since April 2006 to strengthen the support to the methadone patients infected with HIV. This paper attempts to paint a clear picture of the socio-demographic features of this group of methadone patients as well as their reactions to the illness.
