Refractory pathological memory on opioid will be generated in animals after chronic opioid treatment, which revealed the participation of learning and memory in opioid dependence. Opioid also exhibits significant influence on learning and memory itself. Based on different animal models and different programs for drug treatment, opioid produces inhibition or enhancement on memory formation, consolidation and retrieval, respectively. The complexity of the effect of opioid on memory reflects the variety of interaction between opioid receptors and many non-opioid receptors. In spite of all the controversy, great progress has been made in this field in recent years.
