Geotourism provides a new perception to sustainable development of new tourist attractions by using existing and available geological resources. Land in Hong Kong is scarce. Exploring new tourist attraction is extremely difficult. 300% of the territory is covered by granites and about half of it is urbanized. However, the remaining area comprise the most fascinating and interesting geological features in the territory and possesses great geotourism potential. Apart from attracting ecotourists, geotourism development in the granitic areas of Hong Kong help popularizing geosciences and enhancing appreciation of rocks and landforms which arouses public awareness and support for geoconservation. However, the development encounters a number of planning, administration and safety problems and requires the collaboration of government, local people and geotourism operators to find out the best solution.
