The development and new progress of the theory of line formation depth with its relatedcontributinn and response functions a-re stated in this series of paPers, while the recent wok isemphasized. The application of the theory especially to the deriwtion of the structure of solarvector magn6tic fields is presented. In this first paper, the theory concerning the contributionfunction, its liIintation and the issue of whqlleness are discussed.
