This thesis is a study of the null subject phenomena in English and Chinese, embedded in the theoretical framework based on universal grammar. PRO＇s syntactic properties determine its distributions in different syntactic structures. Control theory regulates the occurrence and interpretation of PRO. The attempt to employ the theory of Empty Categories to analyze Chinese sentence patterns improves the traditional study of Chinese, has a great significance to the study of Chinese verbs and syntax, and also proves whether the theory of UG is still suitable for Chinese.
