The irrelerant sound effect, a phenomenon in the research on attention and memory, may be conducive to exploring the effect of noise on people's cognitive process, work performance efficiency, and physical and mental health. After briefly going over the definition and the theoretic dispute over ISE, this article mainly introduced ISE in terms of different intensity of sound, theoretical analysis, application value, and some relevant recent researches. Finally the article provided a simple research prospect, which involved ISE theories, irrelevant sound selection, research techniques integration, and individual differences in ISE.
