Open heart surgical operation was performed in 333 patients with cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB). 134 patients received the combined techniques of blood conservation, consisting of transfusion of pooled blood at the onset of CPB, reinfusion of residual blood in oxygenator, high dose aprotinin priming, and topical application of ATP solusion to the heart, pericardium, and mediastinum before sternal closure. The results show that the mean volume of blood transfusion and the cases required homologous blood >1000ml were significantly less in the blood conservation patients than that in the control patients.
