In recent years, the nations of South America have been highly active in energy diplomacy. Cooperative ties have been further strengthened, the integration process continues to accelerate, and many sectors have seen substantial breakthroughs. With the initiative and advocacy of such nations as Venezuela and Brazil, South American states have coordinated local political will and political capital to bring forward a variety of plans for energy cooperation and integration, with the goal of maximizing profits and exerting energy sovereignty. These plans are now coming into effect. Venezuela and Brazil, furthermore, are using their advantageous positions in the energy sector to develop energy diplomacy worldwide and to take the lead in regional affairs.
