艾丽丝·霍夫曼的小说《欲望山庄》自1997年问世以来,得到的是一些负面评价,其主要原因是《欲望山庄》被认为是艾米莉.勃朗特的代表作《呼啸山庄》的翻版。在《欲望山庄》里主要探讨的是现实主义和现代主义。首先对两部作品中的异同进行分析,然后对两部作品中的人物、主题以及写作手法作重点对比研究,最终得出结论:《欲望山庄》刻画了现代社会的真实生活以及我们在现实生活可能遇到的问题,因此《欲望山庄》比《呼啸山庄》更有现实意义。

Alice Hoffman＇s novel Here on Earth has received some negative reviews since its first publication in 1997, mainly because it＇s considered as an imitation of Emily Bronte＇s masterpiece Wuthering Heights. The examinations on realism and modernism in Here on Earth are among the discussions. This paper is concerned with the realistic means through the studies on similarities and differences between Wuthering Heights and Here on Earth with emphasis on the comparison between characters, themes and writing techniques. Based on this, there comes the conclusion that Here on Earth presents the real life in the present society and the problems that we may encounter in our own life, so that Here on Earth contains more realistic meanings than Wuthering Heights.
