Interpreting the Intrinsic Relationship between Model Minority and Multiculturalism

在黑人民权运动等一系列社会运动的影响下,服务于特殊政治目的的“模范少数族裔”理论在20世纪60年代的美国出台,并在80年代再次兴起。这一时期也是多元文化主义在美国的兴起和发展时期,从这两种理论提出的社会背景、政治目的和精神内涵出发,可以发现“模范少数族裔”理论一方面顺应了多元文化主义思潮;另一方面又对一些主张表现出抵制意图。

Under the influence of African-American Civil Rights movement and a series of other social movements, the Model Minority thesis which served special political purpose came into being in America in the 1960s. In the 1980s, the thesis once again aroused much attention from the media. This process is accompanied by the development of multiculturalism. Comparing the social background, political purposes and essence of these two thoughts, we can tell that the model minority thesis, on the one hand, conforms itself to multicultural ideology; on the other hand, repels some propositions of multiculturalism.
